CIS Platform Analytics (CIS-PA) Study Guide: Blueprint, Key Topics and Study Plan
How to pass the ServiceNow CIS Platform Analytics (CIS-PA) exam: blueprint weights, indicators, breakdowns, data collection, dashboards and a 4-week plan.
The ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist - Platform Analytics (CIS-PA) exam validates that you can design and implement KPIs on ServiceNow: indicator sources, indicators, breakdowns, data collection and dashboards. It is aimed at consultants and analytics specialists who deliver Platform Analytics (formerly Performance Analytics) to customers.
Three areas (indicators, breakdowns and dashboards) make up about 75% of the exam. Learn how they connect, then practice data collection and troubleshooting.

How the building blocks fit together
- An indicator source picks the records: facts table, conditions and frequency.
- An automated indicator aggregates those records (count, sum, average and so on).
- Breakdowns split the scores by group, priority or category. They need a breakdown source and a breakdown mapping.
- A data collection job calculates and stores the scores, and optionally snapshots of the records behind them.
- Dashboards and widgets show the scores with time series, targets, thresholds and filters.
If you can explain each of these steps in your own words, you're in good shape.
What to study in each domain
Architecture and Deployment (10%)
- Components of Platform Analytics and typical use cases and stakeholders.
- Deployment approach: start with business questions, then define KPIs.
- Content packs as a starting point.
Configure Indicators and Indicator Sources (25%)
- Indicator sources: facts table, conditions, frequency (daily, weekly, monthly and so on).
- Indicator types: automated, formula and manual.
- Aggregates, unit, direction (minimize/maximize), precision and Collect records (snapshots).
- Targets, thresholds, key indicators and indicator groups.
Configure Breakdowns and Breakdown Sources (25%)
- Breakdown sources define the elements (e.g., all assignment groups).
- Breakdown mappings link a breakdown to each facts table. No mapping means no data.
- Breakdown matrix, element filters, exclusions, scripted mappings and bucket groups.
Data Collection (10%)
- Scheduled daily collection vs. historic data collection for past periods.
- Job configuration: relative start/end, indicators included, and performance.
- Troubleshooting: job logs, missing scores, wrong breakdown results.
Data Visualization and Dashboards (25%)
- Choosing the right visualization for the question being asked.
- Dashboards, widgets, time series aggregations and scorecards.
- Filters that apply across multiple widgets, dashboard sharing and access.
- Analytics workspace and KPI analysis features.
Administration and Advanced Implementation Solutions (5%)
- Content packs, advanced data collection options and Spotlight.
Most common CIS-PA exam traps
- Frequency comes from the indicator source, not from the widget.
- No mapping, no breakdown data. A breakdown needs a mapping for every facts table it is used with.
- Formula indicators don't collect data. They calculate from other indicators' scores.
- Drilling into records requires snapshots (Collect records). Without them you only have numbers.
- Historic vs. daily jobs. New indicators show no history until you run a historic collection.
A 4-week CIS-PA study plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Official training; on a Personal Developer Instance build 3 indicators on Incident |
| 2 | Breakdowns, mappings, matrices and element filters; run historic and daily jobs |
| 3 | Dashboards, time series, targets, thresholds, filters; first timed practice exam |
| 4 | Review weak domains and the documentation; 2-3 more timed practice exams |

How hard is the CIS-PA exam?
CIS-PA is considered one of the more technical CIS exams. Questions often describe a KPI requirement and ask which configuration delivers it, for example whether you need a new indicator, a breakdown, a formula or a time series. Candidates who have only used dashboards (but never configured indicators and jobs) find it difficult.
The fastest way to close the gap is to build a complete example yourself: an indicator source, two automated indicators, a formula indicator, one breakdown with mappings, a historic collection and a dashboard.
