CIS Data Foundations (CIS-DF) Study Guide: Blueprint, Topics and a 4-Week Plan
Everything you need to prepare for the ServiceNow CIS Data Foundations exam: blueprint weights, key topics, common traps and a realistic 4-week study plan.
The ServiceNow CIS Data Foundations (CIS-DF) exam is all about one thing: a CMDB people can trust. This guide walks you through the blueprint, the topics that matter most, and a realistic plan to get exam-ready in four weeks.
Govern is worth 35% of the exam, so start there: learn CMDB Data Manager, CMDB Health and de-duplication first, then the IRE (identification and reconciliation), and finish with CSDM.

The CIS-DF blueprint at a glance
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Govern | 35% |
| Insight | 20% |
| Ingest | 19% |
| Configuration | 15% |
| CSDM Fundamentals | 11% |
Notice that Govern alone is worth more than a third of the exam. Spend your study time accordingly.
Key topics per domain
Configuration
CI class hierarchy, CI Class Manager, identification rules, relationship types and suggested relationships.
Ingest
Service Graph Connectors, IntegrationHub ETL, import sets and, most importantly, how the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) decides whether to insert or update a CI and which data source is authoritative.
Govern
CMDB Data Manager policies (retire, archive, delete), data certification, CMDB Health dashboards (completeness, correctness, compliance), duplicate CI remediation and stale CI rules.
Insight
CMDB Workspace, health scorecards and reporting on data quality to stakeholders.
CSDM Fundamentals
The CSDM domains, the difference between business services, service offerings, application services and technical services, and the phased adoption approach.
A 4-week study plan
- Week 1 - Baseline. Take one full practice exam without preparation. Note your weakest domains.
- Week 2 - Govern & Ingest. Read the documentation for IRE, Data Manager and CMDB Health; reproduce them on a Personal Developer Instance.
- Week 3 - Configuration, Insight & CSDM. Build a small CSDM-aligned service model in your PDI.
- Week 4 - Exam simulation. Take the remaining practice exams under timed conditions and review every explanation. Book the exam once you score 85%+ consistently.
Common traps
- Confusing identification (is it the same CI?) with reconciliation (which source may update which attribute?).
- Mixing up business services and application services in CSDM.
- Forgetting that Data Manager policies can require approval before CIs are retired or deleted.
How hard is the CIS-DF exam?
CIS-DF is less about memorizing screens and more about choosing the right CMDB capability for a data problem. Candidates who have run a real CMDB implementation (integrations, duplicates, health dashboards) usually find it fair; candidates who only studied theory find the scenario questions tricky, especially around IRE and Data Manager.

FAQ
How many questions are on the CIS-DF exam?
The CIS Data Foundations exam has 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, with a 90-minute time limit.
How long does it take to prepare for CIS-DF?
Candidates with hands-on CMDB experience typically need 3-4 weeks of focused study. Without CMDB experience, plan for 6-8 weeks and do the exercises on a Personal Developer Instance.
What is the most important domain on the CIS-DF exam?
Govern, at 35% of the blueprint. Focus on CMDB Data Manager, CMDB Health metrics, data certification and de-duplication.
Does CIS-DF cover CSDM?
Yes. CSDM Fundamentals is its own domain (about 11%), and CSDM concepts such as application services and service offerings also appear in scenario questions in other domains.
